Arkane duo set up new studio and plan first game announcement next month

Arkane Studios founder Raphael Colantonio and executive producer Julien Roby have set up a new dev company called WolfEye Studios, and have revealed that they’ll be announcing its first title at The Game Awards in December. The two were cohorts at Arkane for a decade and change, and while Roby previously worked on the likes of Dishonored, Colantonio left Arkane in 2017 and has kept a fairly low profile since.

All that is about to change with the creation of WolfEye, however, and Colantonio admits that things are considerably different 20 years on from his last gamble in the industry.

“The world has changed since 1999 when I started Arkane Studios, so while it is way easier to be taken seriously by investors and publishers after our run at Arkane, there are new challenges that keep it interesting,” he told Gamasutra. “The market has changed, our tastes and desires too. I’m not the same person that I was back then, but there is one thing that hasn’t changed: I want to create a game that is very dear to me and my friends at WolfEye.”

WolfEye Studios won’t have an HQ, as the pair would prefer to work remotely with their team.

“We’ve always been fans of remote collaboration, so it’s not really new to us,” said Colantonio.

Roby added “To add to that, with the team being fully distributed it means we have access to the best talents, without constraint related to their geographical location. It also gives access to very different work conditions and lifestyle, where people are treated as responsible adults who manage their own time.”

WolfEye will steer clear of the world of AAA titles and focus on indie games as the studio begins its operations.

“Going independent allows us more ways to do what truly matters to us: deliver a deliberate human adventure,” Colantonio revealed. “And smaller budgets mean we can take more risks, innovate and make uncompromised games that are true to our passion.”
