The as-yet-unannounced Mortal Kombat sequel will feature DC’s Peacemaker and is set for release in September, a new report suggests.

The Mortal Kombat leaks just keep coming. Mere days after NetherRealm and series creator Ed Boon teased the next entry in the gory fighting series, a new report outlines some of the guest characters that might appear in the game. According to Windows Central's sources (as picked up by VGC), the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 (as it’s reportedly called) will include several familiar names as part of its character pass. These are said to include Peacemaker from the DC universe and the scary moral blank, Homelander, from The Boys.

The same sources also suggest that Mortal Kombat 1′s release isn’t too far away, with its launch pegged for September 2023  – though “plans may be in flux,” Windows Central adds.

These latest morsels of (potential) information come in the wake of Twitter’s @bilbil_kun's revelation that the next Mortal Kombat will be a reboot, and not called Mortal Kombat 12 as previously assumed. This tallies with NetherRealm’s own teaser, which showed the hour hand on a clock skipping the number 12 and pinging round to the number one.

NetherRealm hasn’t yet confirmed or denied the rumours, though in a typically mischievous tweet, Ed Boon later wrote, “Ummm…. for the record. We never konfirmed our next game is a Mortal Kombat game.”

While we don’t yet know whether Peacemaker (played by John Cena in the TV series of the same name) or Homelander will indeed appear in the next Mortal Kombat, the series has a track record of throwing in random guest characters. Previous famous faces have included the likes of Jason Voorhees, Kratos, Freddy Krueger, John Rambo, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Leatherface, and erstwhile McDonald’s antagonist, Hamburglar. We may have made that last one up.

Are the Mortal Kombat rumours correct, or so much hot air? Given the number of details leaking out of the production, we’ll likely know more soon – the fighter could even have its proper unveiling at Sony’s next PlayStation Showcase. Though even that, for now, is just a rumour.
