Capcom continues to shift millions of games, with Resident Evil topping its list of best-selling franchises.

That sound of clinking you can hear in the background? That’s my dishwasher running. But if you happened to be sitting in Capcom’s offices right now, the clinking might be champagne glasses – or maybe cups of tea of coffee it’s the morning in Japan.

At any rate, Capcom has published its latest quarterly earnings statement, and predictably, it reveals it’s sold absolutely shedloads of games this year. Shedloads.

Put in slightly more mathematical terms, Capcom says that it’s managed to “achieve 11 consecutive years of full-year operating profit growth”, with this past financial year boosted by the storming success of Street Fighter 6, which has so far sold 2 million copies since its launch in early June. Then there’s the slightly older Resident Evil 4 Remake, which is closing in on the 5 million copies mark.

The bigger surprise, perhaps even to Capcom, is just how well the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection's two volumes have sold – altogether, they shifted 1.32 million units. It’s a testament, really, to just how much of a dedicated following the Mega Man games still have.

In fact, Mega Man figures highly in the list of Capcom’s best-selling franchises. On the last page of the Japanese firm’s statement, you’ll find a list of its most popular series, ranked by their cumulative sales. It goes like this:

  • Resident Evil – 146 million units
  • Monster Hunter – 94 million units
  • Street Fighter – 52 million units
  • Mega Man – 40 million units
  • Devil May Cry – 29 million units
  • Dragon’s Dogma – 7.7 million units

That’s a lot of units. And it’s interesting to see Dragon’s Dogma holding its own among such esteemed company, given that it’s only had one release in its fledgling series so far (Dragon’s Dogma 2 is on the way at some point). Here’s hoping that the success of the recent Battle Network Legacy Collection will convince Capcom to do a bit more with the charming (if rock hard) Mega Man series, too.

Sad to see the Ghouls ‘N Ghosts series hasn’t ranked more highly on the list, though.
