Blasphemous 2 out this year, first trailer emerges

Blasphemous 2, the sequel to The Game Kitchen’s dark and grisly Metroidvania, is out this summer. Here’s the first trailer to prove it.

Described as “the second scripture in the Blasphemous series”, Blasphemous 2 is due for release this summer. Like its 2019 predecessor, the sequel will take the form of a hack-and-slash Metroidvania with an eye-catching line in murky, gothic imagery.

Once again featuring the agile, monosyllabic knight known only as the Penitent One, Blasphemous 2 takes place in a new non-linear world stuffed full of platforming challenges, traps, and hideous enemies to slaughter, with its story taking place shortly after 2021’s Wounds of Eventide expansion.

One of the original game’s most memorable aspects was its gloriously twisted pixel art, such as a gigantic, blindfolded baby weeping blood, or a flying, disembodied head with oozing skin. Blasphemous 2 continues the horrifying tradition, with plenty of baroque catacombs and armies of tormented creatures.

We particularly like how the sequel contrasts the shadowy backdrops with vibrant splashes of purples and reds. Basically, if Hieronymus Bosch somehow teleported to 1990s Japan and worked at Konami on a Castlevania game, it’d probably look something like this.

As you can see from the trailer, the animation and combat looks more fluid and refined than its predecessor, while developer The Game Kitchen have said we can expect a number of new weapons, moves, and combos, as well as the ability to customise the Penitent One’s skills as the campaign progresses.

The original Blasphemous was well-received when it came out four years ago, and it’s pleasing to see that the original game did well enough to make a sequel viable. It’ll be exciting to see how its developers have expanded and refined the game’s Metroid-meets-Dark Souls action this time around.

Blasphemous 2 is due for launch in late summer 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.
