MultiVersus | open beta closes in June, full game due in 2024

MultiVersus

MultiVersus, Player First Games’ brawler, is closing its Early Access in June, with a full release scheduled for next year.

For the past few months, players everywhere have been able to settle such age-old questions as, “could Bugs Bunny beat Batman in a fight?” or “Who has a more powerful punch – Gizmo out of Gremlins or Velma from Scooby Doo?”

It’s all thanks to MultiVersus, the competitive brawler from developer Player First Games that definitely isn’t inspired by Smash Bros. The game entered Early Access in July 2023, but the open beta phase is now scheduled to close in June.

We know this because of a blog post written by Player First co-founder Tony Huynh (thanks, IGN). Thanking players for taking part in MultiVerse’s open beta, Huynh then wrote, “To do this the right way, we will be closing the MultiVersus Open Beta on June 25, 2023. As part of this process, we’ll be pausing updates and taking the game offline as we prepare for the launch of MultiVersus, which we are targeting for early 2024.”

Huynh then adds that, while some offline features will be available, including local access and the in-game training room, all online modes will be disabled until the full game’s launch next year.

Slightly more controversial is Player First’s decision not to provide refunds to players who’ve spent money during the Early Access phase. That particular bit of information is confirmed in the developer’s own FAQ, it reads, “Refunds are not available as a result of the Open Beta closure,” but adds that “all progress and previously earned or purchased content will carry over when MultiVersus returns in 2024.”

In other words, players who’ve purchased things like character variants and items will still have access to them when the game relaunches, but they’ll have to wait at least six months before they can use them again in online brawls.

MultiVersus is loosely pencilled in for launch in early 2024 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
