Twenty-three years after its debut, Excitebike 64 is finally making its way back to consoles on 30th August.

Nintendo has announced that Excitebike 64 will be the latest game to arrive on Nintendo Switch Online as part of the Expansion Pak offering.

The game will be released on 30th August, some 23 years after it made its debut on the Nintendo 64 in the space year of 2000. It’s not the first time the game has been re-released – it also made its way to the Wii U Virtual Console in 2016 – but this time around it can reach a potentially much bigger audience.

The Switch Online version of Excitebike 64 will include the original’s signature local four-player mode, but this time around, online multiplayer has also been added.

The launch has been heralded by an authentically gnarly trailer, and a suitably 2000s bodacious description: “How long has it been since you’ve carved a blaze of glory through a pack of dirt, slinging mud into the air as you pull off incredible stunts on a motocross bike?” it shouts. “If the answer is “too long,” you won’t have to wait to experience these thrills again, because Excitebike™ 64 game roars onto the Nintendo 64™ – Nintendo Switch Online library on August 30th, available to play for everyone with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership!”

Excitebike 64 was the sequel to the 1984 NES/Famicom game Excitebike, and a further sequel of sorts – Excite Truck – was released for the Wii in 2006. Later we had Excitebots: Trick Racing and Excitebike: World Rally, both released in 2009, but the Excite series has been dormant since then.
