Following rumours of a current-gen remaster, Rockstar has instead announced a Red Dead Redemption port for Switch and PlayStation 4.

After several weeks of rumours and seeming leaks, Rockstar has come out with some official Red Dead Redemption news – and no, it isn’t the current-gen remaster many were predicting. Instead, the studio’s much-loved 2010 western is getting a port to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.

The reissue will include the zombie-fied expansion, Undead Nightmare, and will appear on Nintendo eShop next Thursday – 17 August (thanks, Kotaku).

If you prefer your games on cartridges and discs, then a physical release is due to emerge on 13 October. There’s a trailer to prove all this, which you can see below these words.

Rumours of a new Red Dead Redemption first began circling in late June, when an update on a Korean games rating board site got everyone excited.

More recently, people digging through the source code on Rockstar Games’ website noticed a new Red Dead Redemption logo and references to something called RDR1RSP – leading to theories that it might stand for Red Dead Redemption 1 Remaster SP.

Rockstar’s announcement today appears to put hopes of a modern, 4K remake of Red Dead Redemption to bed, at least for now. More gallingly, a much-requested PC version still has yet to emerge.

Then again, 2021’s ‘visually enhanced’ Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, which used AI to iffily update three of Rockstar’s classic sandbox adventures, was so grim that maybe it’s just as well the studio didn’t attempt something similarly half-hearted with Red Dead Redemption.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently in development at Rockstar, and appears to be set in Miami, according to some leaked footage which emerged last year. It’s currently thought that GTA 6 will emerge sometime between April 2024 and March 2025.
