Resident Evil 4 Remake will get its Mercenaries mode as a free slab of DLC, available from April 7.
Resident Evil 4 Remake is out today, which means lots of us will spend the weekend alternately shooting angry villagers and admiring the back of Leon S Kennedy’s head.
If you have fond memories of the original Resident Evil 4, though, you may also remember the Mercenaries mode, a survival challenge that involved gunning down enemies and racking up points.
The mode isn’t currently available in the main game, but Capcom’s Edvin Edso revealed back in February that The Mercenaries would be made available as a free DLC after launch.
Thanks to IGN, we now know exactly when that DLC will drop – 7 April, to be precise. As was the case with the 2005 Resident Evil 4, The Mercenaries isn’t immediately available – you’ll first have to complete the main campaign to unlock it.
In case you’re still on the fence about Resident Evil 4, Capcom has put out a final launch trailer to win you over. It shows off the remake’s startlingly detailed new graphics, and some of the finest haircuts you’ll see in any video game this year. If you’re keen to avoid seeing any of the survival horror redo’s zanier set-pieces, though, we’d politely suggest you skip the trailer – there are some sequences in Resident Evil 4 that are best left as a surprise.
In our review, resident (but not evil) critic Carlton Hill described the Resident Evil 4 remake as “near perfect”, with familiar characters and locations given a modern overhaul, and Leon now able to access some smart new moves. The most horrifying trip to Spain ever captured in a game now looks better than ever. We’re intrigued to see whether Capcom have taken a similarly bold approach to The Mercenaries – though if it’s just the 2005 mode with prettier graphics, we’ll still be happy.
